Prajwal Revanna, former MP, finally came out on Saturday and broke his silence after he was convicted by a special court in Bengaluru in a rape case. Addressing the court, the suspended JD(S) leader has said he is an innocent man and that his only crime, according to him, is having gone big in politics quickly, hence becoming a target. In an attempt to get a more lenient punishment, Revanna emotionally begged the court by saying that he had not seen his relatives, especially his parents, in the last half a year.
Revanna claimed to have been framed in the premeditated rape case by the prosecution, who put forward the women who had made the rape allegations. He explained that these complaints were registered six days before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and none of the women registered complaints of their own free will. “They claim that I raped many women; none of them went willingly. They were brought in deliberately by the prosecution side,” he said.
The former MP, who is qualified with a BE in Mechanical Engineering, also stressed his academic caliber and said he never managed to achieve anything based on his own abilities. He insisted that he was politically persecuted in the accusations he was facing.
The verdict that was given out on Friday concerns a case that involved a 48-year-old woman who was the domestic help at his family’s Gannikada farmhouse in the Hassan district of Karnataka. The woman claimed that Revanna raped her twice in 2021, and the time was even recorded on video. Prajwal Revanna argued that the case was registered long after these videos were leaked and argued that the victim never opened up to her husband or other relatives at that moment.
The grandson of a former Prime Minister, HD Deve Gowda, Revanna, has four cases against him of being accused of raping and sexual harassment. His sentencing is imminent at the court, although the case is creating controversies yet again in regard to sexual misconduct charges, as represented by politicians.
