New Delhi: According to a recent report, the draft of the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2022 is expected to receive approval from the Union Cabinet today, July 5. A trustworthy government source has revealed that the bill will be presented in Parliament during the upcoming Monsoon session.
Last December, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed optimism about the passage of the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill and the Telecommunication Bill during the Monsoon session of Parliament.
In April 2023, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that a new data protection bill was prepared and would be introduced in the Parliament’s Monsoon session in July. This update came as the apex court was addressing concerns related to the privacy of social media users.
The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill aims to establish the rights and responsibilities of citizens (referred to as Digital Nagrik) as well as the lawful obligations of data fiduciaries in handling collected data. The bill’s purpose is to regulate and safeguard the use of personal data, defining user rights, business obligations, and data usage guidelines.
As the approval from the Union Cabinet is anticipated, the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2022 is expected to advance further in the legislative process during the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament.
