NEW DELHI: Former Chief Justice of Supreme Court Ranjan Gogoi has been nominated for Rajya Sabha by the President Ramnath Kovind. Know more about erstwhile Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.
Ranjan Gogoi was born on 18 November 1954. He is the son of Assam’s former chief minister Keshav Chandra Gogoi. He started practicing in the Guwahati High Court. On 28 February 2001, he was appointed as a permanent judge in the Guwahati High Court.
He was appointed as the Chief Magistrate of Punjab and Haryana High Court on 12 February 2011. On 23 April 2012, he became the Judge of Supreme court and retired on 17 November 2019. He was the first ever Chief Justice from North-eastern state of India.
Some historical verdicts by former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi
- Ayodhya Verdict
This was one of the huge and historical decision of CJI Ranjan Gogoi’s career. A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court along with him gave the final verdict on the disputed land of Ram temple and Babri Masjid which had been running for hundreds of years. This decision was heard on 9 November 2019.
- CJI office under RTI
The office of Chief Justice of Supreme Court of India will come under Right to Information Act. This Judgement of Supreme Court was delivered on 19th November 2019. The court said that the office of Chief Justice is a public office and hence will come under RTI Act. This verdict was also given by Ranjan Gogoi along with the five-judge bench of Supreme Court.
- National Register of Citizens (NRC)
There was whole lot of Controversies across the country on implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. CJI’s decision remained unchanged. He ensured that NRC could be implemented within the stipulated time frame so that people living in Assam could be identified illegally. Gogoi was born in Dibrugarh, Assam.
- Income case of Amitabh Bachchan
Ranjan Gogoi being the Judge of Supreme Court also gave the verdict on 2016 income tax return case of Amitabh Bachchan. A bench of Justice Gogoi and Justice PC Pant delivered the verdict on Income Tax Department to re-examine the income and tax returns of Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan while passing the judgment in favor of the Income Tax Department. The court rejected the 2012 judgment of the Bombay High Court in this case in which Amitabh Bachchan was relieved of his income and income tax returns by a double check.
Rafael Verdict
14 November 2019 When a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi ruled on the Rafael deal between India and France for the Indian Air Force. Some ministers, MPs and senior lawyers had filed a petition for reconsideration challenging the deal. But the court rejected the petitions and clearly said that there is no need for a separate investigation in this case.
To maintain the dignity of Supreme Court a Press Conference was held Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi raised his voice to uphold the dignity of the country’s highest court. Angry at the functioning of the then Chief Justice Deepak Mishra, Gogoi held a press conference with three other judges of the Supreme Court in January 2018. It was for the first time in the history of the country that the judges of the Supreme Court came together publicly in front of the media regarding the internal matters of the court.
