In Karur, an actor-politician Vijay rally became uncontrollable due to the fact that there was a huge delay in the arrival of the actor, officials reported. On Sunday, Tamil Nadu DGP G Venkataraman gave information saying that the arrival of the leader was announced by the party that Vijay belonged to, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), at 12 noon on Saturday itself. Nonetheless, Vijay did not arrive at the location until 7:40 pm, more than seven hours afterwards, abandoning anyone who was present to wait in the scorching heat without enough food or water.
The rally would be a part of the Velicham Veliyeru (Let There Be Light) campaign organised by Vijay and would be held between 3 pm to 10 pm in Velusamypuram on the Karur-Erode highway. Although the event was scheduled for 13:10, the announcement on X (formerly Twitter) by TVK led to supporters beginning to flock at 11 am. People were gathered in great numbers and were waiting in silence when they knew that the leader would come several hours late.
The DGP claimed that the excessive waiting time in the scorching sun caused a lot of distress to the participants. Approval for the meeting was sought between 3 pm and 10 pm. The TVK Twitter page said he would be coming at 12 noon, and so people started arriving at 11 am. He came at 7:40 pm. There was a shortage of food and water with the hot sun and a lack of it among the people, Venkataraman said.
The event got out of control, and what the school administration termed as a stampede-like crush. When the crowd of thousands of people rushed 100 times to listen to Vijay, it caused havoc. Vijay was speaking to people at that moment when the incident took place, and he had to pause his speech. The police are investigating the events that led to the mishandling of the crowd and the breakdown in communication, which led to the mayhem.
This statement by the DGP emphasised the need to give announcements and manage the crowds in case of any large-scale public events.
