New Delhi: The martyrs of the 2001 Parliament attack were honored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, saying their sacrifice will continue to inspire the nation.

“Paid homage to those martyred in the 2001 Parliament attack. Their sacrifice will forever inspire our nation. We remain eternally grateful for their courage and dedication,” PM Modi wrote on X.

While protecting the Indian Parliament from a terrorist attack on December 13, 2001, a number of persons gave their lives. Among those killed were head constables Om Prakash, Bijender Singh, and Ghanshyam; Jagdish, Matbar, Kamlesh Kumari, and Nanak Chand; and Deshraj, a gardener of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

Terrorists from the Pakistan-based militant groups Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) were responsible for the attack. Five Delhi Police officers, two members of the Parliament Security Service, one CRPF constable, and a gardener were killed in the incident. Additionally, it increased tensions between India and Pakistan, which resulted in the standoff between the two countries in 2001 and 2002.

Five attackers entered the Parliament complex on the day of the attack in a vehicle with the official labels of the Home Ministry and Parliament. They were later slain by security personnel. More than 100 people, including key politicians, were inside the premises at the time.

The terrorists, armed with AK-47 rifles, grenade launchers, and pistols, breached the security by placing fake identification stickers on their vehicles. After reaching the Parliament complex, they targeted the car of Vice President Krishna Kant, who was inside the building. In response, the vice president’s security personnel negotiated with the gunmen and secured the area.
