New Delhi: The leaders of the INDIA bloc have given a crackdown criticism towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the remarks accusing the opposition of enslavement and for indulging in the ‘mujra dance’ only to earn the votes of the Muslim vote bank. Mujra is a dance form rooted in the Mughal empire in the Indian subcontinent.

Pawan Khera, a congress spokesperson, did not take lightly the remarks made by the Prime Minister of India, fuming at the Prime Minister’s choice of words and language and further adding that the Prime Minister should seek medical help or get checked for mental health. Even Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale criticised Modi for his words, saying that Modi’s previous comments were suitable for women’s rights.

Thus, Gokhale noted the transition of Modi from the formal advocacy of “Naari Shakti” to the tendentious commentaries on women such as “mujra”. There are some things wrong with this. For example, he condemned Modi for using low-class language despite the smart exterior he has been building for the past years.

Addressing concern, Manoj Jha of the RJD described Modi’s remark as worrisome and opined that Modi Ji may be developing the conceit of royalty. Jha criticized such language from a sitting Prime Minister, emphasizing the same concern and the importance of decorum and dignity in public life.

Likewise, Priyanka Chaturvedi of the Shiv Sena (UBT) uploaded a video of Modi’s speech and came up with a funny caption, wishing the star campaigner a quick recovery as a sign of poor health was apparent from his defaming spree.

In all, the reaction of political leaders shows that anger and outrage at Modi’s remarks are not limited to any particular political affiliations and that the discursive degeneration of political discussions is a trend causing more apprehension than delight. The exchange raises questions on the need to be polite when making political statements within the country or from leaders holding top positions.
