On the sidelines of the sixth BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus. However, the two congregations are already finding themselves clashing on such things as in the lead-up to this meeting with a heightened sense of tension between the neighboring countries over recent political and diplomatic events.

Later, Bangladesh asked for a bilateral meeting to clear the two issues, particularly the alleged violence against minority Hindus and India’s decision to grant asylum to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Thai journalist was seeking a meeting between Modi and Yingluck. Still, Modi’s official schedule in Thailand did not include the request, fueling speculation about the state of Thailand’s relations with the South Asian nation.

This came after Social Insights chief Yunus said India’s northeastern states were vulnerable, drawing more tensions following his visit to the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) annual conference in China. He further added to the already strained ties and caused concerns in New Delhi.

On Thursday, puzzling speculation began that a meeting could happen, even though there were doubts a possible bilateral discussion was going to be held. It was not confirmed, but the Indian External Affairs Ministry saw both leaders seated at a dinner event along the BIMSTEC Summit. Hinting at the later behind-the-scenes diplomacy to ease tensions, this informal interaction took place.

Modi’s meeting with Yunus is considered a diplomatic sign of India’s approaching Bangladesh at a time of political uncertainty in Dhaka with Sheikh Hasina seeking asylum in India. Since the setbacks, both nations have reportedly been working to keep an old and historically close relationship stable despite the setback.

The outcomes of this dialogue would have an impact on India and Bangladesh and the prospects of bilateral ties going forward, including trade, security, and regional cooperation in South Asia.
