In the context of Bangladesh’s National Day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed a heartfelt message to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus for his understanding and consideration of India’s interests and concerns while addressing each other.

Modi wished the people of Bangladesh in his letter and expressed that India would further bolster its relationship with a country that shares a border with it. The relationship between the two is based on shared visions of peace, stability and prosperity, he stated. Modi stated that India is committed to progressing with the India-Bangladesh partnership based on common aspirations for peace, stability and prosperity with mutual sensitivity to each other’s interests and concerns.

The Indian Prime Minister also mentioned the long historical relations between India and Bangladesh by recalling the sacrifices during Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971. March 26 was a day he described as a day that symbolizes the shared history and the hard battles shared by both nations. Modi finished off his letter with a respectful acknowledgement of Yunus as a leader: “I have the honor to transmit to Excellency, the assurances of the highest consideration.”

The declaration of Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan in 1971 is marked by Bangladesh’s National Day, an event that was to determine much of South Asian geopolitics. India and Bangladesh have cooperated over the years on the economic, security and cultural fronts, but the relations have been tested recently.

Modi’s message comes at a time of heightened tensions in the relationship between the countries in the face of reports of violence against Hindus and interest among Bangladesh’s hardline Islamist groups. These issues have drawn further attention with the formation of a new interim government headed by Yunus. In the context of this, Modi’s message of mutual concerns represents Indian intent to continue a constructive and sensitive diplomatic posture.
