Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his remarks during the first session of the 20th G20 Summit in Johannesburg, articulated India’s vision for an ambitious set of world initiatives to enhance collective security, health preparedness and inclusive growth. As the threat of narcotics as sustenance for terrorism grows, Modi proposed the launch of a G20 Initiative on Countering the Drug–Terror Nexus, noting the pernicious effect of hazardous substances such as fentanyl.
The focus of the initiative is to coordinate financial systems, governance structures and security pods to prevent and thwart the economic activity that binds drug terrorism together. He also called for taking the opportunity to launch a G20 Global Healthcare Response Team, with trained medical professional from member states available to deploy at a moment’s notice during a health crisis or natural disaster. This approach would enable nations to deploy a coordinated force for a rapid response, thus preventing loss of life while enhancing global preparedness.
Additionally, he called for an Africa-skills multiplier programme, following through on India’s commitment to capacity building and development on the African continent. He noted the need for our world to stand together, referring to how,” We are stronger together in the face of health emergencies and natural disasters”.
