On Saturday, the PM Narendra Modi announced two big programs to boost the agricultural sector in India: the PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana and the Mission in Aatmanirbharta in Pulses, which will cost a total of 35440 crore. It was launched on the occasion of a special Krishi programme of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi, in memory of the birth anniversary of Loknayak Jaiprakash Narayan.
The PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana, ₹24,000 crore, is aimed at improving the productivity of agriculture and sustainable farming. The plan aims at promoting crop diversification, enhancement of irrigation systems, and adoption modern, environmentally friendly agricultural technologies. It also seeks to reinforce post-harvest infrastructure in terms of building storage facilities at the panchayat and block levels. Also, the farmers in 100 selected districts will have improved accessibility to both long-term and short-term credit, which will enable them to invest in improved agri-resources and technologies.
The second project is the Mission of Aatmanirbharta in Pulses with a budget of 11,440 crore. It is aimed at increasing the self-sufficiency of the country in pulses through enhancing productivity and increasing the area of cultivation. The mission will endeavor to enhance the whole chain of value, including procurement and storage, processing, to minimize the losses realized after harvest, and enhance market preparedness. Through increased production on the domestic front, the initiative will reduce the reliance on imports and maintain a stable price position for both consumers and farmers.
In the programme, Prime Minister Modi engaged farmers, repeating his pledge to agricultural self-sufficiency, farmer welfare, and rural development. He put emphasis on the importance of modern agricultural practices, improved infrastructure, and focused policymaking to serve the agrarian community in India.
Besides the initiation of the two schemes, the Prime Minister also inaugurated projects worth above 5,450 crore in the agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, as well as food processing sectors.
