Since Donald Trump began his second term as President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been scheduled to visit the United States from February 12 to 13, his first trip to the US. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced during a special briefing by the Foreign Ministry (MEA) Friday that the visit was official.

Focus will be on deepening ties between India and the US with high level discussions on bilateral relations with regard to improving relations in areas such as trade, defence, technology and global security during his visit. The visit underscores India’s strategic partnership with the US especially its cooperation in the field of global peace and economic growth.

This follows confirmation days earlier by a White House official from one of President Trump’s public overtures to meet on his Asia trip. Earlier, Trump had disclosed in a press interaction that he spoke to Modi over the phone. Trump told reporters he had a long conversation with him this morning and that he will come to the White House next month, probably in February.

On Jan 27, the two leaders discussed an array of issues but highlighted their common vision for global security, economic advancement, and progress. With a commitment to strengthening the India-US partnership, PM Modi declared, “We want a mutually beneficial, trusted relationship. Together, we will strive toward peace at every place in the world and prosperity and the welfare of our people.”

Luckily for us, major trade agreements, defence partnerships, and new technology announcements will be made during the visit, which many eyes will be watching. The Modi-Trump meeting is expected to further consolidate India-US ties, making both countries big allies in the global arena.
