India’s railway expansion gets its biggest boost as Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to flag off the first Vande Bharat Express to Kashmir from Katra, Jammu, on April 19. This comes ahead of the completion of the 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail stretch, a much-needed infrastructure project linking the region to the rest of the country. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister, confirmed the development on Sunday.
The Jammu-Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express is initially expected to provide service from Katra after work on the Jammu railway station is complete. The railway project was completed last month, which allowed the team to join the Katra Baramulla trial successfully runs and get approved by the Commissioner of Railway Safety for its launch.
During the visit, PM Modi will also inaugurate the world’s highest railway bridge, the engineering feat with regard to the Chenab River, before flagging off the high-speed train. It will offer much-needed rail connectivity to Kashmir, which has been a long pined demand of the Kashmir and travellers.
Both in the country and in the valley, train services can’t be said to have reached the destination. Train services in the valley are currently available from Sangaldan to Baramulla only while the rest of the country is connected only up to Katra. This expansion ensures that travel to and from Kashmir on the Vande Bharat network will be improved, facilitating the flow of trade, tourism and many other opportunities.
The launch of the Vande Bharat train in Kashmir reflects the government’s commitment to further develop connectivity in the region. It is expected to augment economic development, promote tourism, and promote developed ground infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. It will be a new era in the region’s railway history when the inauguration on April 19 takes place.
