New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to pitch for a united global approach in dealing with the situation in Afghanistan, overcoming poverty and combating challenges of climate change and the coronavirus pandemic at the 2-day G-20 Summit in Italy beginning October 30th. The Prime Minister will be travelling to Rome and Glasgow from October 29th to November 2nd to attend the 16th G-20 Summit and the World Leaders’ Summit of COP-26 respectively, Foreign Minister Harsh Vardhan Shringla said.
The G-20 is a leading global forum that brings together the world’s major economies. Its members account for more than 80% of the global GDP, 75% of global trade and 60% of the population of the planet. As per reports, India is scheduled to host the G-20 summit in 2023 for the first time. Prime Minister Modi is likely to present India’s perspective to combat the key challenges facing the globe and is expected to call for a united approach to the situation in Afghanistan as well to deal with the pandemic and climate change.
The forthcoming summit will be centred around the theme ‘People, Planet, Prosperity. The Prime Minister will also hold several bilateral meetings, including with Italian PM Draghi. On Thursday, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, highlighting India’s climate action in meeting its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) related to the Paris climate agreement, said that New Delhi intends to go in with a strong message with full commitment to COP26. “We are perhaps the only G-20 country to have fulfilled our NDCs and outperformed them,” Mr Shringla said in a virtual address at the India Global Forum.
