On Thursday, India and Malaysia announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would attend the ASEAN-India Summit virtually instead of attending the regional meeting in Kuala Lumpur due to scheduling conflicts and other commitments. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will attend the key meetings on India’s behalf.
Both Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Prime Minister Modi confirmed the plans on social media. Modi, who was expected to visit Kuala Lumpur on October 25, posted about a warm conversation with Anwar, congratulating him on Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and expressing hope for success in the upcoming summits. Modi said he looks forward to participating virtually in the ASEAN-India summit, while reinforcing India’s commitment to bolster the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Prime Minister Anwar mentioned that the leaders had discussed ways of taking bilateral relations to a more strategic and comprehensive level. Modi explained that Deepavali celebrations being celebrated in India influenced his decision to participate virtually to observe Deepavali while also engaging with ASEAN leaders.
