New Delhi: PM Modi will address the nation at 5 pm today. The announcement was made on the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) official twitter handle.
This addressal comes as several states ease restrictions after the deadly resurgence of the virus in the form of a second wave.
Several states across the country including Maharashtra and Delhi have started the process of ‘unlocking’ by gradually easing coronavirus-induced restrictions and curfews. However, states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh and Goa, decided to extend the lockdown citing their infected counts.
It is reported that PM Modi will shed light on the vaccine procurement policy which gained criticism over the past few days from the Supreme Court. The SC last week called the centre’s liberalized policy of free vaccines for people who are 45 and above, and paid doses for the 18-44 group, “arbitrary and irrational”. It also pointed out several other flaws like shortage of vaccines reported by the states, and directed the centre to review its vaccination policy and submit a strategic charting of the vaccine availability until December 31 2021.
Sources say that PM Modi will provide information about all said terms by the SC. He is likely to warn the citizens against dropping their guard or presuming that the disease is over. Health Experts inform that the third wave has begun its initiation whose intensity would be determined by the citizens attitude towards the virus.
With today’s numbers, the total number of coronavirus cases has now reached 2,89,09,975 while the death toll rose to 3,49,186.
