Jhargam: Prime Minister Narendra Modi again addressed CM Mamata Banerjee’s comments against the Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevashram Sangha. Modi addressed an election rally in Jhargram in West Bengal and accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of using the state police, which was a sign of the “art of targeting the monks for politics”.

TMC goons have brazenly attacked the ashram of Ramakrishna Mission, said the Prime Minister amidst this speech condemning the alleged assault by the party on the mission. He also continued to lash out at the TMC for allegedly betraying the Hindus in the religious arena by targeting such respected socio-religious organizations.

Again, attacked Mamata Banerjee for her alleged comments against monks of Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevashram Sangha as part of a political strategy to garner a majority in the TMC’s support banks.

ISKCON and Chartre-houses like Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevashram Sangha uphold the highest ideals of service and ethics. Still, the Chief Minister of Bengal is openly threatening them to seek political mileage from her vote bank.

At one of the earlier rallies, Mamata Banerjee had accused some of these organisations of influencing and supporting the BJP’s agenda. Monks of Ramakrishna Mission in Asansol tried to convert priests to vote for the BJP; Sangh Sai Baba stopped a Trinamool Congress agent from entering the Baharampur polling booth in Murshidabad.

But these very organizations – the Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevashram Sangha – vehemently denied any involvement in politics and claimed that the focus of their work was strictly limited to the service of society.

The exchange between Modi and Banerjee reflects the political situation in West Bengal, where conflicts and counter-conflicts are campaign themes this season. This contest, therefore, takes solid shape when advocates like Ramakrishna Mission enter into the fray of political legitimization in the state and further create a viable threat to its religious-cum-cultural make-up.
