On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level security meeting at his official New Delhi residence within a day of both India and Pakistan making a joint statement asking for an immediate ceasefire in land, air, and water arenas. According to reports by a leading news agency, the meeting was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the top commanders of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with PM Modi.
At the meeting, officials evaluated the recent security situation after the past four days of heavy drone and missile strikes along the border between the two nuclear-armed countries. Important defence and diplomacy officials carefully assessed the events and speculated on strategies that would protect stability and increase the military capabilities of India at its borders and in other regions.
Instead of officially announcing the unilateral ceasefire directly, the first country to go public with it on social media was all-American President Donald Trump, thus demonstrating both countries abiding by the dialogue over further conflict. Not long after, the Indian Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, gave an official declaration regarding the ceasefire.
The Director General of Military Operations of Pakistan spoke to his counterpart in India at Indian Standard Time 15:35 hours earlier today. Misri said during the briefing that the agreement had called for stopping all forms of use of military power on land, in the air, and at sea immediately at 17:00 hours IST today.
Protecting the civilians near the border who had been fleeing and exposed to escalating hostilities, the ceasefire is a long-awaited reassurance. Though the current threat has calmed down, the Indian government is keeping an eagle eye on the situation, and focuses on strategic vigilance from now on.
