Japan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo on Monday morning to participate in the Quad summit on May 24 at the invitation of the Japanese PM Fumio Kishida.
“Our defence ties are growing rapidly, from exercises and information exchanges to defence manufacturing. We are doing more in cyber, space and underwater domains,” PM Modi said in the op-ed titled ‘India-Japan: APartnership for Peace, Stability and Prosperity.
The MEA issuing a statement on PMs visit said- PM Modi met Dr Nobuhiro Endo, chairman of NEC Corporation, and appreciated the company’s role in India’s telecommunication sector and discussed opportunities in new and emerging technologies in India.
Besides Mr. Modi, the Quad summit in Tokyo on May 24 will be attended by U.S. President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Australian Prime Minister-elect Anthony Albanese.
The Quad, or Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, which comprises India, the US, Japan, and Australia is a regional formation based on shared interests over cooperation in the strategic Indo-Pacific region. The member nations say they share values of “democracy, freedom and rule-based international order”.
Significant security issues in the Indo-Pacific region are likely to come up at the Quad summit. All members share an interest in peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The Biden-led US administration is invested in sending a message of deterrence with regard to Taiwan.
