Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he had a telephone conversation with newly elected UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday. Modi also communicated felicitations on Starmer’s recent win and his becoming the PM of the UK. Modi also invited Starmer to access India in the earlier part of the year, according to a PMO statement.

Speaking on the relations between India and the UK, PM Modi underlined a strong desire to enhance the bilateral CSPT between both countries, according to the PMO readout of the call.

They both highlighted the need to improve cooperation in each other’s countries and across different fields, offering to extend cooperation to the sector that was most important to them. Accepting the imprint of the Indian community on the social, economic, and political profile of the UK, they agreed to proceed with people-to-people contact, as the PMO statement pointed out.

Earlier, Modi took to Twitter on Friday and extended his congratulatory message to the newly elected leader of the opposition, Starmer. He also thanked former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for his good performance and for his last initiative in strengthening the India-UK partnership.

It recorded a drastic political shake up after the party polled 412 seats out of 650 in the House of Commons, which was the best result since the return to power of Tony Blair in 1997. On the other hand, Conservatives won only 121 total seats, which is the worst seat performance so far and indicates the end of Rishi Sunak’s tenure both- as the Prime Minister of the UK and the leader of the conservative party.
