Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three semiconductor projects valued at around ₹1.25 lakh crore through virtual groundbreaking on Wednesday. The momentous occasion included the PM’s address to the nation’s youth.
The foundation stone was laid for three pivotal projects: the Semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), Gujarat; Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facilities in Morigaon, Assam, and Sanand, Gujarat.
On March 13, 2024, a landmark day for India’s semiconductor ambitions, PM Modi participated in the ‘India’s Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat’ program. During this event, he laid the foundation stones for the semiconductor facilities, emphasizing their combined value exceeding ₹1.25 lakh crore.
In a post on X, Modi stated, “Tomorrow, will take part in the ‘India’s Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat’ programme and lay the foundation stones for three semiconductor facilities worth over Rs. 1.25 lakh crore.”
A key feature of the program was the involvement of students from over 60,000 institutions. Modi encouraged tech enthusiasts, particularly the youth, to engage in the event, highlighting its significance.
The projects align with the Prime Minister’s vision to position India as a global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technology development. This strategic move aims to generate numerous employment opportunities for the country’s youth, as per the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) will spearhead the establishment of the semiconductor fabrication facility in DSIR under the Modified Scheme for setting up semiconductor fabs in India. Boasting an investment exceeding ₹91,000 crore, this initiative marks the inauguration of India’s first commercial semiconductor fab.
Furthermore, TEPL will also lead the development of the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility in Morigaon under the Modified Scheme for Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP). This project carries an investment of approximately ₹27,000 crore.
Prime Minister Modi’s focus on semiconductor projects demonstrates a commitment to technological self-reliance and economic growth, reinforcing India’s standing in the global technology landscape.
