Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally inaugurated the Vizhinjam seaport in Kerala’s capital city of Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) has built what is being hailed as India’s first deep-water, dedicated container transhipment port at Vizhinjam. This ₹8,867 crore project, developed under a landlord model with a PPP structure, aims to significantly elevate India’s position in global shipping.

Operational since last July, the port boasts an annual capacity of 5 million TEUs and has already handled approximately 250 container ships. Its strategic location near major international shipping lanes and a natural depth exceeding 20 meters will allow it to accommodate larger vessels that currently bypass Indian ports for hubs like Colombo, Dubai, and Singapore. Bloomberg sources indicate an anticipated additional investment of over ₹8,500 crore to triple its cargo handling capacity.

India’s First Transshipment Port

The Vizhinjam Port is an ambitious step forward on the path to prosperity. Located in Vizhinjam, Kerala, APSEZ is developing this deep-sea water port as India’s first Mega Transshipment Container Terminal.

The world class, future ready port is the only transshipment hub in the Indian subcontinent, closest to the international shipping routes, and is centrally located on the Indian coastline. It has a Natural draft of 20-24 m & minimal littoral drift.

Vizhinjam Port offers large scale automation for quick turnaround of vessels with state-of-the-art infrastructure to handle Megamax containerships. Its capacity in phase 1 is to be 1 million TEUs and in subsequent phases, another 6.2 million TEUs will be added.
