The first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, October 8, and this is a major development in the Indian aviation industry. This is a state-of-the-art airport whose operations are expected to commence in December 2025, and the sale of tickets is likely to start by the end of October. The major national airlines like IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express are already prepared to fly out of the facility as soon as it starts.
Navi Mumbai airport has been developed at an approximate cost of 19650 crore, which makes Mumbai one of only a few cities in the world that boasts of various airports, alongside London, New York, and Tokyo. Delhi is one of the cities in India that, when its satellite cities are deemed as part of the larger metropolitan area, is accompanied by Hindon (Ghaziabad) and the future Jewar Airport to complement the Indira Gandhi International Airport.
NMIA has one of the most outstanding features of being the first fully digital airport in India. The airport has advanced digital facilities that minimise the waiting period and enhance passenger convenience. Customers are able to reserve vehicle parking spaces, book online baggage delivery, and even do immigration procedures online. Arun Bansal, the CEO of Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL) that runs the airport, attributes it to these innovations that make NMIA an airport full of anxiety. As an example, passengers will get real-time information via their phone, like which carousel their baggage will be found on thereby reducing the possibility of confusion and stress.
The Adani Group is collaborating with the City Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) in the development of NMIA in five phases. Upon its completion, the airport should contribute considerably to the increase in connectivity to Mumbai and the areas around the city, both in domestic and international travel. The newest digital technology and the state-of-the-art infrastructure will make Navi Mumbai International Airport a model of new, modern, and people-friendly airports in India.
