New Delhi: On October 20, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, inaugurated India’s first regional rapid train, between Delhi and Meerut, named “Namo Bharat”. The name is a play on the prime minister’s initials, “NaMo.”

The 17-kilometer priority section of the 82-kilometer-long first corridor of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) began operations for passengers on October 21, 2023. The trains operate from 6 am to 11 pm, with a frequency of 15 minutes.

The RRTS is a high-speed rail system that is expected to reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut to less than an hour. The trains have a design speed of 180 kilometers per hour and an operational speed of 160 kilometers per hour.

The naming of the RRTS trains “Namo Bharat” has been met with mixed reactions. Some people have praised the decision, while others have criticized it as being self-promotional.

It is important to note that the RRTS is a public-private partnership project. The Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh are each contributing 25% of the project cost, while the remaining 50% is being funded by private investors.

Earlier on Wednesday, Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement on Wednesday saying that prime minister would inaugurate the priority section of Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor and flag off the ‘RapidX train’ connecting Sahibabad and Duhai Depot.
