On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the new terminal building in Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati, which is a major breakthrough in the aviation sector of Assam. The recently opened Terminal 2 has become the largest airport terminal in the Northeast and would be able to reinforce air connectivity throughout the region.
The modern terminal which is capable of accommodating about 13.1 million passengers per year has been built at a cost of about 4,000 crore. In the course of the inauguration, the Prime Minister had a look around the state-of-the-art facility and saw its passenger facilities and operational infrastructure.
The total cost of the project is 5000 crore according to the officials, with almost 1000 crore of the amount going to the development of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities. The introduction of MRO infrastructure is likely to boost the capacity of aircraft servicing in the region, decrease the need to rely on some other aviation hubs, and generate new job opportunities.
As the new operational terminal is commissioned, Guwahati airport will become one of the major aviation centres in not only Assam but also the whole of Northeast, enhancing the regional, national, and international connectivity. Authorities claimed that the increased capacity would enable it to handle the increased passenger traffic and also facilitate economic growth because of increased trade and tourism.
Terminal 2 was designed with inspiration of the rich cultural heritages and biodiversity of Assam. The terminal, which covers about 1,40,000 square metres, has the elements of architecture that mirror the natural surroundings and the culture of the state. The airport is named after Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi, the first chief minister of Assam, who contributed significantly towards the political identity of the state.
In the event, Prime Minister Modi also opened a 80-foot-tall statue of Gopinath Bardoloi on the airport premises, in his honor.
