Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday was briefed on the alleged gangrape of a 19-year-old woman in his parliamentary constituency Varanasi, where he arrived to launch development projects. “Those driven solely by the lure of power remain focused only on the growth of their own families, not the welfare of the nation,” the Prime Minister said while inaugurating 44 development projects worth Rs 3,880 crore in the ancient city of Kashi.
Hailing the transformation of Varanasi over the past decade, PM Modi said the city — his parliamentary constituency — has moved beyond its traditional image of spiritual antiquity to become a beacon of modern urban progress.
“Today, I’ve had the fortune of visiting Sankatmochan Maharaj’s Kashi, just ahead of Hanuman Jayanti. The people of Varanasi are not just celebrating a festival, but also the festival of development,” the Prime Minister said.
Referring to key infrastructure improvements, he cited the newly built flyovers and ring roads that have eased congestion. “Ten years ago, traffic jams were a daily ordeal. Now, people can move across the city swiftly. Reaching places like Ghazipur or Jaunpur used to take hours — today, the journey is quick and seamless, he added.
Varansai Rape Case
“She was intoxicated many times by many people and was gang-raped. The involvement of so many men indicates that it was a planned attempt. My daughter studied Commerce in her inter, and she was planning on pursuing sports. She is 19 years old. I do not know or recognise any accused,” the victim’s father said.
“Yogi Adityanath is known for tactfully handling such cases. I urge him to give us justice. I do not demand the accused to be hanged, but the punishment should be so severe that people think twice before raping anyone,” he added.
