New Delhi: On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the Indian athletes who had just returned from the Commonwealth Games to his residence and praised them for their incredible performance in the CWG 2022.
“PV Sindhu and Vinesh forced their opponents to quit the court and flee when they were defeated. Under Harmanpreet Kaur, our cricket team played admirably. Your accomplishments will serve as an example for future generations of girls, “During his conversation with the athletes, PM Modi stated. Further PM Modi added “We performed well at U-20 World Athletics, where we achieved our best performance to date at the World Athletics Championships. International para-badminton competitions and World Cadet Wrestling competitions both were seen with fantastic performances from us. For Indian sports, these are exciting times”.
On July 28, CWG 2022 began with a grand opening ceremony. The two Indian flag bearers for the occasion were announced to be PV Sindhu and Manpreet Singh. Weightlifter Sanket Sargar won silver in the men’s 55kg competition to become India’s first medal winner of the competition. However, Mirabai Chanu was the first person from the nation to win gold.
Having lost to Australia in the gold medal game, the Harmanpreet Kaur-coached team of India’s women’s cricket team won the silver medal. As a result of their victory over New Zealand, the women’s hockey team won the bronze medal and the men’s hockey team the silver. India successfully completed the 2022 Commonwealth Games in fourth place with 61 medals (22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze). With 12 medals, including six gold, wrestling took first place on the list, followed by weightlifting with 10 medals. India’s performance at the Commonwealth Games ranks fifth all-time, just behind their 2010 home-country performance, which has seen them win a total of 101 medals
