On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had bilateral negotiations with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at Hyderabad House, New Delhi, discussing the development of the India Canada Strategic Partnership and areas of further cooperation in major areas.
Prime Minister Carney is paying his first official visit since he came to power in July 2018 and is accompanied to India by an invitation of PM Modi, who received him on February 27. This trip started in Mumbai and he went on to the national capital to have high level engagements. He will leave after the completion of his visit to Delhi.
In the delegation-level discussions, the two leaders evaluated current cooperation in the areas of trade and investment, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research and innovation, and people-to-people relations. The talks were meant to enhance economic interaction and at the same time boost collective democratic principles and international collaboration.
The day before, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar paid a visit to Prime Minister Carney and made him promise to work towards a progressive bilateral relationship. The Canadian leader was welcomed in New Delhi by Union Minister of State, Jitin Prasada.
The meeting is a follow-up of the initial engagements between Modi and Carney through the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis and the G20 Summit in Johannesburg in 2025. The officials indicated that the discussions represent the desire of both countries to revitalize and deepen their strategic relationship in the new global economic and geopolitical conditions.
