Varanasi– Addressing a gathering in Varanasi, the Prime Minister acknowledged the historical and cultural significance of the city, referring to it as the oldest living city and a symbol of knowledge, culture, and spirituality. He expressed his delight at bringing the G20 Development agenda to Kashi, emphasising the importance of development for the Global South. The Prime Minister highlighted the challenges developing countries face due to the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions, stressing the collective responsibility to ensure the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are included.

He called for comprehensive, inclusive, and sustainable efforts to increase investment in fulfilling the SDGs and finding solutions to address many countries’ debt risks. The Prime Minister shared India’s success in improving lives in Aspirational Districts, urging the G20 Development Ministers to study this model. He also discussed the need to bridge the data divide and promote the democratisation of technology for meaningful policy-making.

The Prime Minister emphasised India’s respect for nature and its commitment to climate action through initiatives like Mission LiFE. He underscored the importance of gender equality and women empowerment in achieving the SDGs, advocating for an Action Plan for Women-led Development. Concluding his address, he encouraged the dignitaries to explore the spirit of Kashi and experience its cultural richness. The Prime Minister extended his best wishes for the success of the deliberations in promoting Agenda 2030 and fulfilling the aspirations of the Global South.
