Though Prime Minister Modi has openly declared his intention to withdraw the special status granted under Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress and other Opposition parties have been riled up and have decided to make this one of their issues.
Countering the prepositions of opposition leaders on their plan to restore Article 370, Modi, in an interaction with a news agency, expressed doubt in an interview that it is hard to believe that anyone who knows well how the constitution works in our federal system would talk in such dares.
To further underline the control the opposition has little over the issue of dismantling Article 370, Modi said that it lies beyond their jurisdiction. He explained further that as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, even if he had the power, he would be at the mercy of others. He criticized the ploy of the opposition to falsely promise to the predicate of the multiparty democracy in not only the Centre but also amongst the state governments by asserting their autonomy in their respective spheres.
Also, Modi called for a press conference in Congress, and guests could announce that Article 370 will be completely abolished. Modi criticized the Congress’s stance in regard to the Constitution and B.R. Ambedkar, which he compared to scraps of the Constitution, which had not been applied uniformly across the country for the last 70 years because of the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir according to Article 370. However, he also stated the overall advantage on the marginalized populations such as the Dalits and the Valmikis. They obtain the reservations of sanctioned places in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time.
The Narendra Modi government revoked Article 370 on August 5, 2019, effectively eliminating Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and restructuring the region into two Union territories: The former state as well as Ladakh.
Hence, in December of the same year, the Supreme Court validated the abrogation of Article 370, dismissing the claims that it is rather a permanent lack of special privilege. A revival of elections is agreed upon to be held in the region by September 2024 in parallel with returning of statehood functions at the earliest opportunity.
