The Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday December 3, 2024 and took information about the flood situation in some parts of the state and assured them that all possible assistance will be provided from the Centre.
Mr. Stalin wrote on Twitter that the Prime Minister wanted information about the damage, and the Chief Minister reiterated his request for assistance from the Center for disaster and relief assistance. Mr. Stalin requested that Mr. Modi “send a Union committee to carry out a detailed assessment of the storm damage.” “I am sure that the Prime Minister will immediately consider this request of Tamil Nadu and take appropriate measures,” wrote Mr. Stalin.
Mr. Stalin had urged the Prime Minister in his letter to allocate ₹2000 crore from the NDRF to support urgent rehabilitation and restoration efforts. “The districts of Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi, in particular, received rainfall equivalent to an entire season’s average (more than 50 cm) in a single day, resulting in widespread flooding and severe damage to infrastructure and crops,” he wrote.
“A dedicated workforce comprising 38,000 government officials and 1,12,000 trained first responders are actively engaged in rescue and relief operations… Despite our best efforts, the scale of this disaster has overwhelmed the state’s resources,” he said.
Villupuram district in northern Tamil Nadu was hit by unprecedented floods on Monday following heavy rains that left villages and residential colonies inundated, bridges and roads almost blocked, and standing crops also destroyed.
After a mud slip on the evening of December 1 during rainfall, a boulder rolled down a hilltop, crushing a house near Tiruvannamalai, resulting in the recovery of five dead.
