Deeply saddened by the demise of Pope Francis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the late pontiff was a towering figure of compassion, humility and spiritual courage. Pope Francis, who died aged 88, was the first Latin American and was known for a progressive vision that left an indelible mark on millions of people worldwide while serving with absolute dedication to humanity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an impressive post on X, sent his condolences to the entire global Catholic community. “Deeply pained by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. In this hour of grief and remembrance, my heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community,” he wrote.

Earlier this year, the Prime Minister had a personal encounter with Pope Francis at the G7 Summit in Italy in 2023. He noted that the Pope expressed the depth of his love for India and his consistent call for development with inclusivity and holism. Millions worldwide will ‘always remember Pope Francis for being a beacon of compassion, humility and spiritual courage’. From youth on, he had dedicated himself to the realisation of the ideals of Lord Christ. Modi noted him as one who meticulously served the poor and downtrodden.

He also commended the Pope for his capacity to instil hope and healing in the people who are downtrodden and marginalised. His commitment to inclusive and all-around development was something he was greatly inspired by. He said he will always cherish his affection for the people of India.

Pope Francis′s life, with his spiritual depth and his social responsibility, made him a person adored not only as a leader in the Catholic Church but rather in the whole world. PM Modi ended by saying, “May his soul find eternal peace in God’s embrace”.
