Myanmar’s military leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday over the phone, the office of Indian Prime Minister said, and they expressed his deep condolences over the tragic loss of lives brought about by a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake. More than 1,000 people now are dead and many more injured and homeless after buildings in those areas buckled under the disaster.
On social media platform X, PM Modi also confirmed India’s commitment to helping its neighbour in this hour of crisis. I have Spoken to Senior General H.E. Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. We conveyed our most deepest condolences for loss of lives in the devastating earthquake. India stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Myanmar in this hour; a close friend and neighbor, the prime minister posted.
India has responded promptly to that disaster with ‘Brahma’ Operation, a massive relief effort to provide immediate humanitarian aid. The initiative is sending rapid disaster relief materials, search and rescue teams and emergency aid to Myanmar in response to the catastrophe.
Modi also stated that he has been expeditiously dispatched disaster relief material, humanitarian assistance and search & rescue teams to the affected areas as part of #OperationBrahma.
India has already delivered 15 tonnes of relief supplies to Myanmar in this operation, comprising of essential food, medical aid and emergency shelter kits. The teams also have been mobilized to help locate and recover the people underneath the rubble.
India’s quick showpointing at its close bond with Myanmar and its willingness to support regional humanitarian projects. India continues to stand by Myanmar in the relief operations and to support the rebuilding and recovery from this tragic disaster.
