On Wednesday, the last stop in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic tour to five countries, including Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and Brazil, was Namibia. This tour has been greatly important because PM Modi will be making his first visit to Namibia; this will be the third visit of an Indian Prime Minister to the southern African state.

The visit of PM Modi is invited by the Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, under whom PM Modi will be having intensive bilateral talks. It is assumed that the negotiations will address a broad variety of questions, such as enhancing economic ties, pursuing trade and investment, climate action, digital relations, education, health, and energy cooperation.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that this visit is indicative of India trying to strengthen its presence in Namibia and is a pointer towards the larger motive to improve relations with African countries. Another statement made by the MEA was that India and Namibia have established a long history with each other on the grounds of mutual respect, similar value systems and purposes to develop and harmonise at the international level.

It is also during his visit that PM Modi will pay tribute to the Founding Father of Namibia, and also the first President, the late Dr. Sam Nujoma, to thank him for the contribution he made to the liberation of Namibia and also to the Indian-Namibian relations. Also, the Prime Minister will give an address in the Parliament of Namibia, which is another step in the enhancement of the diplomatic and parliamentary dialogue between the two states.

This top-level trip will serve the purpose of gaining momentum in the India-Namibia relationship and exploring new possibilities of cooperation in multiple fields, and serve as further evidence of India’s persistence in the sphere of diplomatic relations, as well as the country’s desire to be a stronger participant in global and regional alliances.
