With the start of the second week of July, lakhs of Indian farmers start anticipating the 20th payment of the scheme of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM Kisan). In this effort, farmers who qualify are given 2,000 rupees on a quarterly basis. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to announce this new tranche somewhere in July, but no date has been confirmed as yet.
In the previous year, it was credited in June. But this year, it seems that the schedule got slightly pushed back, and July seems the most likely release window now.
It should be mentioned that not every farmer is entitled to the payment. The official guidelines given in PM Kisan state that anybody who has paid tax on his/her income in the last year of assessment (related to the year 2024-25) cannot avail the scheme even though their landholding is small, regardless of whether it is less than or more than 100 acres. The same exclusion is extended towards the spouse of the taxpayer.
Such as in case a farmer, or his or her husband or wife paid and filed income tax in the preceding year, the farmer will not be entitled to the next 20th payout, in spite of the fact that it was so, that he or she received payments before. The farmers having a second-income stream, i.e. part-time teaching, pension, and small belongings, are also subject to this rule as their source of income (as per the new tax regime) exceeds the 3 lakh tax exemption.
What can farmers do when they are not sure about eligibility?
The farmers who are in doubt must visit pmkisan.gov.in and check the status of the beneficiary using their Aadhaar number or bank account. In case their name is not included, they must verify whether they or their husband filed an income tax return last year.
In case of disparities, the farmers can come to their respective District Grievance Redressal Committee or to their closest Common Service Centre (CSC) to get help and rectification.
