On Tuesday, Punjab DGP confirmed that the Pathankot Counter-Intelligence team managed to thwart a planned target killing by neutralising an organised crime module engaged in several major crimes. During the operation, four persons were arrested, of whom two were juveniles, and police retrieved two pistols and ammunition from their possession.
The preliminary investigations have shown that the apprehended suspects are in touch with other foreign-based gangsters, Nishan Singh (r/o Jaurrian), Shamsher Singh, also known as Shera Mann or Honey ( r/o Mann), and Sajan Masih, alias Goru (r/o Veroke, PS Dera Baba Nanak). It is believed that these ties may lead to valuable sources relating to other active crime in the state. A case has been registered across the State Special Operation Cell in Amritsar, and investigations are going on to trace other connections and future operations.
In another but related operation, Barnala police arrested four members of the dreaded Devinder Bambiha Gang on Monday when they went to rob a house. The four arrested persons are Satnam Singh alias Satti, Gurpreet alias Guri, Sarm Singh alias Rinku and Deepak Singh. In the process, the police managed to retrieve four guns, namely, a Zigana pistol and three other pistols (.30 bore and .32 bore) loaded with live cartridges.
Satnam Singh has a divergent criminal record with more than 22 cases being filed against him, such as murder, attempt to murder, NDPS Act and Arms Act issues. Sarm Singh and Deepak Singh are said to be associated with the narcotics trade.
Criminal investigations and dedicated interrogations of the two detained individuals are underway at this stage in order to identify more of the underlying criminal networks and ward off further threats. The Pathankot counter-intelligence operation underscores the state police’s proactive style against organised crime and preventing prospective acts of violence prior to their realisation.
