The standing committee of the Parliament to look into the two bills moved to discuss simultaneous elections is set to have its first hearing this Wednesday. The proposed legislation has included provisions to advance the idea of “One Nation, One Election.” Ministry of Law and Justice is expected to provide the panel members with details of the legislation.

The joint committee of Parliament, currently chaired by BJP MP and ex-Minister of State for Law, P.P. Chaudhary, consists of 39 people with members of all political parties. The list of well-known members includes Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of the Congress party, Sanjay Jha of the JD(U), the current Shiv Sena MP, Shrikant Shinde, Sanjay Singh from AAP, and the TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee. The panel has erstwhile Union ministers such as Anurag Thakur, Parshottam Rupala and Manish Tewari, among other first-time MPs, including Bansuri Swaraj and Sambit Patra.

The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, which were introduced in the Lok Sabha during the Winter Session, were referred to this committee for further consideration. The government adopted the combination of 31 members for PPO, but due to the demand of other political parties interested in considering the draft legislation, the government increased the size of the panel to 39 members.

This is because the committee comprises 27 members from the Lok Sabha and 12 from the Rajya Sabha, which is spread across the Parliament’s major political parties. There would be some viable proposals, advantages and disadvantages about how this panel could conduct the parliamentary elections wrapped around the country concurrently, which would reduce the costs of the electoral policies and have political stability in India shortly related to One Nation One Election.

The conclusion of these deliberations will play a significant part in determining the fact of electrical reforms in India since the concept of simultaneous elections became an active agenda for the government led by Narendra Modi.
