As announced by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, the Winter Session of Parliament has started on December 1 and would end on December 19. Before the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to the media asking all political parties to make the session smooth, drama-free and aimed at a constructive debate and national interest.
Nevertheless, the first day was marked with serious disturbances. Opposition MPs also sloganeered intensely leading to the adjournment of the Lok Sabha twice as they demanded an immediate debate on the current Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Members of the opposition claimed irregularities and, they claimed vote chori, and they demanded that Parliament to focus on the issues at the earliest.
SIR process is already being introduced in 12 states, which gives more urgency to the need of an opposition to debate. The leaders of different parties have also shown their concern to bring a broad spectrum of issues of concern to the people as well as those of social equality, income inequalities, recent Red Fort blast, the rising pollution problem in Delhi, and the foreign policy of India.
The government held an all-party meeting a day prior to the commencement of a session in which the legislative agenda is stated and political parties are urged to collaborate. The opposition cautioned though that the operations of both Houses would be affected in case debate on SIR is not permitted.
Besides political battles, the government has piled a number of major economic and financial legislations to be discussed. One of these is the Atomic Energy Bill 2025 which is a huge proposal which intends on opening up to the nuclear energy generation industry to privatization in an effort to increase innovation and capacity within the energy industry.
Winter Session will also comprise of 15 sittings in almost three weeks. As the ruling alliance and opposition prepare to argue over vital matters affecting the country, the session is bound to be tough, explosive and decisive.
