New Delhi: The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha meet again for business on December 20, following another day of suspensions that brought the total number of members suspended for the duration of the current Winter Session to 141 on Tuesday, the highest in the history of the Indian Parliament.
Rajya Sabha witnessed repeated adjournments as Opposition members demanded a statement on the Parliament security breach. The Lower House functioned for a little under thirty minutes before Speaker Om Birla adjourned the House until 12 p.m. He also warned Opposition members to not raise placards.
Among parliamentary business, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to introduce in Rajya Sabha a Bill to amend the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017. The Bill was earlier passed by the Lok Sabha. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will also introduce a motion in the Rajya Sabha calling for elections to the University of Delhi’s court. This will enable the House to choose a member from among its members to serve on the court, following the Chairman’s instructions.
Meanwhile, senior Aam Aadmi Party leader and Rajya Sabha member Raghav Chadha attacked the central government for suspending MPs of opposition parties who questioned the lapses in the security of Parliament. He said that today MPs have not been suspended from Parliament, rather democracy has been suspended within the country.
Raghav Chadha said on Tuesday that two accused came inside the House after getting a visitor pass signed by a BJP MP and attacked the House. In a way, both these accused were guests of the BJP MP. Despite this, those BJP MPs are still sitting inside the House and there has been no impact on their membership.
