India again strongly condemned Pakistan at the United Nations, saying that it was illegally occupying parts of Jammu and Kashmir and that it must vacate without delay. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador, Parvathaneni Harish, made the statement in the UN Security Council’s Open Debate on Advancing Adaptability in UN Peace Operations held Monday.
“Jammu and Kashmir will continue to remain an integral part of India and it ever was, is and will remain so.” His strong and clear message was that Pakistan continues to illegally occupy a part of this territory and must vacate it immediately.
His statement is on the heels of Pakistan’s repeated attempts to bring in the Jammu and Kashmir issue during the debate at the UNSC. Commenting on the attempts by Pakistan, Harish called it ‘unwarranted remarks as a part of the country’s long standing strategy to peddle baseless claims and spread divisive agenda on an international platform.’
Harish added that “such repeated references by Pakistan neither validate their illegal claims nor justify their state sponsored cross border terrorism”. Pakistan should not misuse international forums to further its narrow, parochial aspirations and should not divert international focus from real global concerns, he said, adding that he also advised Pakistan not to use these forums for pushing its narrow parochial goals.
From India’s side, Harish ended by putting across a message that India would not be giving a more detailed Right of Reply, and the matter was over.
India and Pakistan have not had relations in good standing, in particular since India, on August 5, took away Article 370 of its Constitution and took Kashmir out of its special status and divided it into two Union Territories.
India has always said that its relations with Pakistan should be normal and peaceful, but only in the absence of terror, hostility and violence. Moreover, in February this year, India exposed Pakistan’s use of international platforms as well as its criticism of Pakistan’s ‘baseless and malicious’ remarks on Kashmir at the UN Human Rights Council.
