Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has made yet another agitating statement that Pakistan is “fully prepared” for a two-front war facing India on the eastern border and the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan along the western border. “We are ready for war in two fronts. We are ready, we are prepared to face both the eastern (India) and western border (Afghanistan). Allah helped us in round one, and he will help us in round two,” Asif said according to reports shared at a public event.
The comments come on the heel of a suicide blast on the streets of Islamabad that killed 12 people in an attack claimed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). This incident has heightened tensions between Islamabad and Kabul as Pakistan continues to allege lengths of the Afghan Taliban is providing shelter to members of the TTP, which Afghan officials deny.
Minister Asif’s latest remarks reflect Pakistan’s ongoing rhetoric around regional security threats. Prior to his latest comments, and without naming specific adversaries, the defense minister had stated Pakistan was effectively “in a state of war,” warning citizens against thinking in terms of distance or that an incident of violence in the region is not their business. Analysts suggest such comments aim to project a posture of strength at home.
