AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have called on the Centre to take urgent action to secure the safety of the Indian students also trapped in Iran as a result of the ongoing unrest. As an urgent matter, Owaisi emphasized that the safety of Indian students should be considered one of the issues of the highest national concern.

Owaisi admitted that the recent dialogue of the foreign minister of Iran with External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar was a good thing but rather not enough without diplomatic negotiations. “Talking is not enough. He has to act quickly on the ground to rescue our students, he said, and that a number of anxious parents have approached him to get assistance.

Another point to note is the magnitude of the problem, Owaisi indicated that there were approximately 70 to 80 Indian students studying at Shahid Beheshti University in Iran with four to eight of those students being of Hyderabad. He also asserted that there are hundreds of Indian students spread in different regions of Iran and most of them are frightened and helpless since the situation is worsening.

Owaisi highlighted several issues of the students and their families. He claimed that in Iran, there is a disruption of the internet services making communication very hard. Moreover, parents cannot get flight tickets on behalf of their children, and a good number of students belong to economically underprivileged groups and cannot cover the expenses of the trip by themselves.

To make the matters worse, Owaisi claimed that certain universities are not handing over passports of students and cannot leave the country. He said this has intensely aggravated stress and uncertainty among the students as well as their families.

Raising the concern over escalating anxiety among parents, Owaisi called on the Indian government to develop an effective evacuation plan to help it to rescue all stranded Indian students in Iran.
