Madhya Pradesh: During religious processions held on the occasion of Eid Milad-un-Nabi on Tuesday, violence erupted in the state’s Dhar, Jabalpur, and Barwani districts. So far, 4 people have been arrested and 5 have been detained in connection with the violence, according to Home Minister Narottam Mishra. Anyone who makes a malicious attempt to disturb the peace in Madhya Pradesh will face severe punishment, he stressed.
While eyewitnesses stated the police used mild force to remove crowds following a disagreement over the route, the police denied employing lathi-charge at the rally. Following an argument over an ‘objectionable’ song being played during a religious procession, some individuals, including a police official, were hurt in stone-pelting in Rajpur town of Barwani, officials claimed. After some people tossed firecrackers and stones at police in Jabalpur while gathering for prayers to mark Milad-un-Nabi, they deployed lathi-charge and lobbed teargas shells, according to police.
When asked about the happenings on Tuesday, Mishra stated, “In Dhar, Barwani, and Jabalpur, the situation is under control. In Dhar, police detained 4 people and listed 85 others in various FIRs. In addition, 5 persons were held in Jabalpur, and 24 people were identified in an FIR filed there. He stated that “the police are on high alert and are closely monitoring the situation.”
