On Saturday, July 13, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the Mumbai and Thane districts, indicating that there would be severe rainfall in certain areas. Additionally, the IMD has issued a warning for high tide in Mumbai’s sea, which is expected to reach 3.69 meters, advising residents to stay inside unless necessary.
The Konkan region of Maharashtra, including the districts of Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, has also been placed under an orange alert. Mumbai saw heavy rain on Thursday morning, which resulted in waterlogging and traffic jams in several parts of the city.
Strong rainstorms hit Mumbai and Thane on Friday, and the IMD predicted that Saturday would see heavy rain and until July 15 could expect moderate rain. Severe waterlogging in the city’s low-lying parts caused by heavy rain resulted in heavy traffic and delayed public transportation. On Friday, IndiGo Airlines also released a traffic caution because of Mumbai’s heavy flight traffic.
Strong winds and heavy rain were brought on by a cyclonic circulation that was developing over Mumbai, the IMD reported. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued by the weather bureau for the Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Goa regions.
Santa Cruz saw 115 mm of rain in three hours on Friday, while Colaba saw 86 mm of rain. On Saturday, the IMD is predicting above 15 mm of rain per hour in Thane and Mumbai.
The city will have its heaviest rainfall today, especially in South Mumbai, Dadar, Worli, Bandra, Powai, Ghatkopar, and Chembur, according to well-known weathercaster @Mumbai Rains on X.
The Maharashtra districts of Raigad and Ratnagiri have also been issued an orange alert. Palghar is now under a yellow alert instead of an orange one, with an expected 5 mm of rain per hour.
For the next 48 hours, the IMD predicts that there will be severe rainfall in the suburbs of Mumbai. The expected maximum and minimum temperatures are 24 and 29 degrees Celsius, respectively.
