Russian news agency TASS said that Doval may hold several meetings with Russian officials on August 7. During this time, a deal can be made between India and Russia regarding oil. Along with this, Doval will clarify India’s strategy to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding India’s oil purchase. Another important thing is that Foreign Minister S Jaishankar can also visit Russia next week.
Ajit Doval Russia visit was pre-planned but it has gained added significance as US President Donald Trump on Monday announced fresh tariff threats against India, accusing New Delhi of profiting from Russian oil while ignoring the Ukraine conflict.
Trump had made serious allegations against India and Russia. He had said that India is promoting war by buying oil from Russia. Russia is earning money and investing it in the war. Trump threatened that if India does not stop buying oil from Russia, then heavy tariffs will be imposed on it. Currently, Trump has imposed a 25 percent tariff on India. A trade deal is also going to be signed between America and India, although it has not been finalized yet.
It is worth mentioning that India is the biggest buyer of oil in the world after China. It buys 35 percent of its oil requirement from Russia. America had earlier also threatened India on the issue of buying oil from Russia. Now it is talking about increasing the tariff. Meanwhile, the good news is that India can get concessions from Russia. Russia can give discount to India for buying oil.
