The IMD has reported that different regions will receive heavy to very heavy rains this week, as well as moderate rains in Delhi and the National Capital Region, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. This weather pattern, IMD said on Wednesday, is due to a depression over the central parts of the country. Depression was reported about 60 km east-northeast of Damoh, 110 km south of Khajuraho, 110 km southwest of Satna in Madhya Pradesh, and 210 km from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh. They are to progress gradually and in a north-northwest direction.
IMD also said that the monsoon trough is active now and is located south of its normal position at a mean sea level. This condition is expected to continue in the next three to four days. Moreover, a cyclonic circulation was observed over south Gujarat at middle tropospheric levels, which contributed to the climate in the region.
Skymet Weather’s vice president for climate and meteorology, Mahesh Palawat, said that the depression, which is currently south of Delhi, is likely to move towards Uttar Pradesh and Northern Madhya Pradesh. “There will be the possibility of moderate to heavy showers in Delhi and NCR on Wednesday and Thursday only,” he said further. The cyclonic circulation, which has developed from the remnants of the Yagi, which recently affected Vietnam, is expected to evolve into a low pressurization system and form a cyclonic formation with the depression. Still, Palawat stressed that it will only be a weak system and will not be very effective.
The IMD also predicted heavy rain at the isolated places in Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Gujarat, while Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, west Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya, and Telangana will likely witness isolated heavy rains.
Damaging winds of between 30 & 40km/h with gusts of up to 50 km/h are expected over the northern region of Madhya Pradesh and in the south of Uttar Pradesh.
India has had an 8% excess of rainfall since June 1. Central India has been receiving 19% excess rain, while northwest India received 4% and the southern peninsula 25%.
