Torrential rains have unleashed widespread devastation across several northeastern states over the past three days, resulting in over 22 deaths and impacting more than 78,000 people. The relentless downpours have triggered severe floods, landslides, and flash floods, leaving a trail of destruction.
Worst-Hit Regions and Infrastructure Damage
Mizoram, Assam, Manipur, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh are among the worst-affected states. Roads have been washed away, homes flattened, and countless residents have been rendered homeless, highlighting the widespread nature of the disaster.
Sikkim Tourist Strandings and Tragic Accident
The adverse weather has also severely impacted Sikkim. Approximately 1,500 tourists were stranded across North Sikkim on Saturday due to landslides blocking key roads. Adding to the tragedy, search efforts for eight missing tourists were hampered by heavy rain on Saturday and later suspended due to rising water levels in the Teesta River. These tourists went missing after their vehicle plunged over 1,000 feet into the river in Mangan district on Thursday night, an accident that also claimed one life and injured two others.
Continued Rain Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rain in parts of the Northeast for the coming days, indicating that the region should prepare for further downpours.
