Shimla/Dehradun, March 3, 2025 – Residents and travelers in the upper reaches of North India are advised to prepare for inclement weather, as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast of rain and snowfall for Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. This weather shift is attributed to a fresh western disturbance impacting the region.
Fresh western disturbances will bring isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall and snowfall to Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on March 3 and 4. Isolated light to moderate rainfall and snowfall are also expected over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on March 3.
The IMD’s predictions indicate that Monday, March 3rd, will see widespread rainfall and snowfall across the Western Himalayan region. Specifically, an orange alert has been issued for portions of Himachal Pradesh, indicating the potential for heavy snow and rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas. Districts like Chamba, Kangra, and Lahaul and Spiti are expected to be particularly affected. In Uttarakhand, similar conditions are anticipated, with forecasts of rain and snowfall in several districts, and warnings of thunderstorms and lightning in areas like Chamoli, Uttarkashi, and Rudraprayag.
This weather pattern is expected to cause potential disruptions, including road closures and possible power outages. Authorities in both states have urged residents and tourists to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel in the affected areas. Ongoing restoration efforts from previous weather events are being complicated by this new wave of bad weather.
The IMD has also noted that while the region is experiencing this western disturbance, other areas of India are seeing varied weather. For example, there are also reports of rising temperatures in some southern regions of India, and also of heat and humid weather in areas like Goa and Konkan.
Travelers are strongly encouraged to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and advisories from the IMD and local authorities.
