New Delhi: Supertech’s twin 40-story towers will be demolished on August 28 according to a ruling by the Supreme Court today. The court further extended the deadline to September 4 in case of delays brought on by weather or technical issues.
The apex court had already set August 21 as the date for demolishing the structures that were deemed illegal. The agencies involved in the twin towers’ demolition were given a “bandwidth” of one week from August 29 to September 4 by a bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and A S Bopanna on the grounds that there might be a slight delay caused by weather and technical issues.
The bench also instructed that all relevant agencies, including Supertech’s management, work together to facilitate the demolition process. Prior to this, on May 17, the Supreme court had, on the advice of experts, extended the deadline for the twin buildings’ demolition until August 28.
The Supreme court’s decision was based on an application by Interim Resolution Professional (IRP) asking for a three-month extension of the deadline, from May 22, 2022, to August 28, after Edifice Engineering, the agency designated for demolition, requested time due to a slight change in design after performing test blasts.
The apex court had ordered that the full amount paid by homebuyers be refunded with 12% interest from the time of the booking and that the RWA of the Emerald Court project be compensated with 2 crore rupees for the harassment it had endured as a result of the twin towers’ construction, which would have prevented the project’s existing residents from getting fresh air and sunlight.
