Nitish Kumar, president of the Janata Dal (United) was sworn in on Friday, April 10 as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha almost a month after he was elected to the Upper House on March 16. This development is a great political change in the leadership of Bihar, although he is still Chief Minister temporarily.
Despite the fact that Nitish Kumar has not given up the position of Bihar Chief Minister, his move to the Rajya Sabha is a move that is generally regarded as a stepping stone that would one day result in the topmost leadership of the state being changed. He can serve as Chief Minister up to six months following his election as a Member of Parliament in accordance with the provisions of the constitution. But he had to leave his seat in the Legislative Council within 14 days after being elected into the Rajya Sabha, which he did by resigning on March 30.
Since taking oath, there has been an increase in political activity both in Patna and New Delhi. To decide on the roadmap to the next Chief Minister of Bihar, a high-level meeting of Bharatiya Janata Party leaders is said to be going on in the capital.
Nitin Nabin, the national president of BJP has made it clear that the NDA alliance has no differences over the leadership transition. Senior Bihar minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary also said that Nitish Kumar will officially resign as Chief Minister in two to four days after he comes back to Patna after visiting Delhi and consults with his alliance.
The developments that are unfolding are an indication of a well-calculated shift in the political setup of Bihar, as the NDA is on the verge of a new power regime without destabilizing the political landscape.
