Maharashtra’s Special Public Prosecutor of the Badlapur sexual assault, Advocate Ujjwal Nikam, said that the accused, Akshay Shinde, started firing at the policemen after learning that he could not escape the law. Nikam said that currently, law enforcement has gathered enough substantiation against Shinde as it has filed two charge sheets against Shinde in this regard. In addition, the victims have definitively pointed a finger at Shinde as the culprit for the violence.
Nikam further emphasized that all the evidence collected by the police was sufficient enough that if the case was presented in the court, then most probably Shinde would have received the death penalty. He argued that this was the most violent reaction the accused could offer, given the fact that he had just grasped the reality of the situation that faced him. These are the feelings that Sayyed Shinde may have used to attack the police force or try to commit suicide during the incident.
Even the prosecutor who was trying to blame the police side said that the police shot with intent only as a bar to fend themselves. He said that this prompted two police officers to fall and get injured, further affirming the fact that it was more of a fight.
Following the incident, the opposition parties in Maharashtra have come out to condemn the Mahayuti government and raise an eyebrow over the event of the encounter. Most of them expressed political influence as one of the possible factors that caused the situation. On the one hand, Nikam criticized the opposition for putting political glasses on and attempting to gain a political advantage when justice ought to be pursued.
However, the current crisis has unfortunately witnessed the emergence of self-serving powers who want to take advantage of this circumstance. They have stated that the truth will be revealed after the judicial investigation,” he said. Regarding the other accused in the Badlapur case, Nikam assured the public that each accused person shall be given a fair trial as required by the law.
